The prospective pupil is me. I'm a guitarist of almost 30 years and I have a degree which is a Major in IT and Minor in Music. The point being any teacher wouldn't have to teach me how to read notation, it would only be about violin technique.

Hi All,

The wife and I are both keen musicians (she the cello, I the violin and piano) who have let our playing slip somewhat recently.

Really keen to start up again and have the space and sheet music to keep a string quartet/trio/piano trio entertained for a good while! If there are any violinists/viola players out there who fancy a relaxed scrape through some Mozart/Haydn/Beethoven (or even a stab at some slightly more taxing stuff for piano trio (Mendelssohn, Brahms, etc), give me a shout. There's always the local library for more sheet music if we need.

Talking of which, Beckenham library used to have a much better collection of sheet music - does anyone know what happened?

Jeff - depending on the level of the prospective pupil, I'm really keen to take on some teaching. Drop me a message if you want to have a chat about it.

I haven't tried anybody. We've only just discovered we even own a fiddle!

I used to learn flute from Susan Martin at Bickley. I think she's still teaching.

For violin, have you tried Nigel Sharpe?

Can anyone recommend a violin and flute teacher? Or maybe just a violin teacher (since we don't actually yet own a flute).

There's more about the Beckenham Concert Band here: http://www.beckenhamconcertband.com/bcbpublic/about/about.html

You'd need to run being a string bass by the present conductor. We haven't had one since the days of Ken Messenger. Provided that you can read bass clef, our conductor may well be interested in entertaining the idea.

And if you know anyone with a drumkit who can read band music, we could be interested, as our current drumkit man isn't in the best of health and can't always do all of the gigs. He's still the percussion man in the band, so right now anyone else would be deputising on an occasional basis rather than being the regular drummer.

Bass guitar taking a tuba part? Genius! I want to try!

I'll have to post in here when the Beckenham Concert Band get their 2010 programme organised. We usually play on the May Day Weekend at the St Barnabas fete, which is generally held at their "other" church hall in Park Langley.

We keep saying that we should do more local performances, but we go where we're asked, and if that means Greenwich Park, the Horniman Museum and Brighton, then that's where we go!

We do usually do some concerts closer to home in the colder months, and Hayes Free Church and Orpington Baptist Church are two possible venues.

At one time we had a bass guitarist who used to double with the tubas, but it's a long time since we've had a string bass. Right now everybody blows their instrument except the percussionist, and even he's got a whistle!

Bromley Music Makers is the 4th Saturday of every month except July and August. I really must make an effort to attend - and to practise something to offer for performance...

Helen

Sorry for the reply delay. I might pop in and have a look one of these days, not that i'm classical in style at all. And I fully understand about not posting too much of your routine online, i'm the same. That's probably why, when I tweet, it tends to be quite esoteric about it.

Jeff, you sound JUST like me. Love my rock n roll, hate jazz (sounds like a good tune falling down stairs)

Let us know where/when you're playing next, i'll pop down and listen in.
