BeckenhamTown.us

Biggest & best independent local community forum, directory, marketplace, events

If you view the site regularly or perhaps you are a member but not yet dived in to adding or starting anything up on this website out of a lack of experience or knowledge, then please do ask me any questions here on this discussion thread and I'll happily help you out.

You can start; your own groups, or join a few; invite friends to join; set up events; publicise your business, sport or club; add photos, add videos, add music; in the Marketplace you sell or offer goods, jobs etc; and overall a whole lot more on the site - even play some games and post your scores for others to beat you.

Anyway... just ask, I'll get back to you as quick as I can, and even if I don't then there are plenty of members here who will no doubt be happy to help too. No question is too silly; I work with websites everyday so sometimes I don't see the wood for the trees, so it's nice to be able to cut the jargon that gets used and help others to get the best out of this site or others.

So fire away !

Hi Jon, I have a question if you can help. Lots of us commenting on the Harris/Kelsey blog but it looks like quite often a brand new discussion is being set up. At the moment if you look at the forum the top 4 discussions are Harris/Kelsey or variations.
Is there anyway to amalgamate all these or should we just have lots of seperate discussions as is the case now?

Thanks very much

Fiona
I agree with Fiona. The layout on this site is not user friendly for robust discussiosn such as this. I am currently preparing a long reponse to the many comments that have been made since I was last able to visit. It's difficult to know how to differentiate it so that everyone is aware. It's partly because many people are reponsing to individual comments and copying in the original at the same time. I have to say that I find Vurtual Norwood a clearer option.

Thanks,

John
The Harris/Kelsey discussion has a few offshoots I'll try and put all into one later today. I would ask those wishing to discuss the issue to stay with the original thread for ease of use and reply by everyone. Bit of a busy day here, so give me a a few hours.

Sorry John, I can't change the site to look or act like Virtual Norwood, but I am making some changes this week for the better across the whole site which will benefit all and make navigation to most wanted pages and information easier too.
I didn't mean it to sound critical. It's great having a Beckenham site - even if I'm not strictly part of the catchment area. Wherelse could we have this debate in real time? I hope this burst of activity will encourage more residents to become involved.

John

Cllr John Getgood
Thanks John, I take all comment with a smile and open mind on how I can keep making this site better and easier for everyone to use. As I'm not a coder I rely on what Ning, its platform can give us, but they are always adding new elements to the site and I'm always on hand to help anyone who gets stuck, is unsure or needs a guiding hand.

I am eternally grateful to all those who view the site, even more to those who join and add comment, debate, content and then invite their friends, family and neighbours. Feel free to keep posting everyone, it's all very enjoyable.
Just to clarify how the website works. If a member decides to leave and delete their membership then all their posts and content automatically gets deleted by the website automation. It is not backed-up by Ning.com, the site's platform provider, nor me.

Members should be aware of this, for although it's a great way to delete all spammer profiles and content for me, if you left and then wanted a picture, video or list etc it will have disappeared forever, unless you yourself have made a copy somewhere on your PC or another website etc.

One may think leaving the site and coming back another time is okay. It is as long as you don't delete your profile, but if you do delete it then everything goes too.

Any questions, just ask here.

Jon

You invited me to comment on difficulties of using the website. You told me to go Forums.

Website Questions, Help & Info

I had to search for this Forum.  It is such a fundamental building ...

Sorry, I am seem to have aquired a colour and underlining by tring to copy the Forum title.

I'll pause now to make sure I am being heard.

How can I cut and paste into here?

Can I include an image in a reply?

I have already replied in another box at the end of this website questions forum. A bit unsettling.

Hi Cliff, you might have a very good good point about placing this forum ahead of the others, as I agree it might help explain better the website's workings and give those who are unsure a quick place to ask questions.

You can't cut & paste pictures/images into these text boxes, but you can click the pain next to the blue LINK pain top left of a text box and then get a picture from your PC to post into your reply.

You can also use the emblem next to it to type in the YouTube URL if you wanted to display a YouTube video in the conversation.

Okay, I've done a quick clean-up where I could and folded the minor forums into the main ones and if you hover your cursor over the Forums Tab at the top of the page now, you'll see all the main 9 Forums listed for quicker and easier navigation into each of them and therefore to the various threads and discussions going on inside them, with the last posted discussions at the top of each reference page.

Hope that makes navigating this site a lot easier. Any more comments feel free to add them here and I'll reply when I can.

Ref Jon's advice that I "can click the pain next to the blue LINK pain top left of a text box and then get a picture from your PC to post into your reply. "

I have tried copying and pasting a photo in the time honoured way but I cannot get it into the pain. Please can someone hold my hand.

Cliff, as I said you can't copy and paste, you can only access your pictures stored on your PC's hard drive and you do that on the instructions above. If you want to use a picture you are copying, the best way to do it is right-click on image, then choose 'Save image as' into your PC's Pictures file on your hard drive - making sure you give it a name you remember and then save. Then you can use the pain on these text boxes to call up that stored image and post them on here. Hoping this helps.
