I recently attended Green drinks, a casual social meeting of various people interested in environmental issues in Crystal Palace.

I don't know of any active environmental groups or people in Beckenham.  I am trying to be as active as I can, but it's hard when you're up against middle class suburbia on your own, with the not in my backyard mentality.

Just to give you an idea of what I've been trying to do over the last year:

  • Street party to build community
  • Obtained allotment plot with goal of self sufficiency
  • Solar panel syetm planned on my roof
  • Insulated & soundproofed my friend's loft
  • Learning how to do cut throat razor shaving to save throw away blades
  • Eco retrofitting a bedroom to passive house standard also using recycled & reused materials throughout
  • Wine, cordial, champagne, jam, chutney making - From grown and foraged local produce.
  • Bicycle maintainence and building
  • Freecycle - lots of items exchanged
  • Eco gift giving, card making etc - From pressed and dried flowers this summer, to reusable wrapping, recycled newspaper
  • British food - buying from the Co-op, making food from only british made ingredients & trying to stay seasonal

This is just the tip of the iceberg for me, and to really do some meaningful projects e.g. large scale energy & building projects requires community collaboration which I don't see much of.  Maybe I'm not looking in the right places.

So if anyone is environmentally inclined and actually wants to do stuff instead of talking about it like most people enjoy doing, PM me or message me on here and hopefully I've set my settings to notify me.

I'm not doing this to have a political debate, so meeting in a pub to discuss green issues in beckenham is a bit of a paradox, but you've got to start somewhere right.............

James you might get further with your ideas if you drop the sneering attitude. Quote: "Its hard when you're up against middle class suburbia on your own." What on earth does this statement mean?

Please don't be so dismissive of Beckenham and make such sweeping statements. Lots of us are interested in green issues, we just don't publish lists of what we do.

I would be interested in some of the ideas you have but I dont't want to be lectured or referred to as middle class as if this is somehow a bad thing.

Well you're probably right, but I wouldn't take it so personal.  Born out of frustration with the speed of destruction of the environment, and very slow human response. Some people will agree with my sentiment and some won't. I am middle class suburban. Anyway, a debate was not what I wanted to get into here.
I more than welcome information on active groups in the area, so please share, and hopefully we can move forward.  I just want to get involved and get things moving...........

Hi James

Well you certainly have lots of ideas....personally speaking family commitments mean I would not wish to take part in an active group as such but would be interested in reading about ideas such as you suggest - you might find others would also. Even if you do not get many replies to your discussion here it will be well viewed thus you are spreading your good ideas around Beckenham.

In our family we are growing more of our own veg and recycling to within an inch of our lives! I am very interested in any info you have on solar panels; our house is south facing and we have toyed with the idea for a few years now.

Goodluck.
