The South London Singers invite you to join us on the first evening of summer for what should be (regardless of the, as yet, unknown weather) a tuneful and appropriate final concert of our 2018-9 season. There will be a variety of items in our ‘Summer Songs with Strings’ programme, some familiar and some, we hope, less so, covering a range of enjoyable music from several eras and composers.
We are looking forward, this time, to singing under the baton of our guest conductor Marcus Wibberley, Director of Music at St George’s and to have choral scholar Niki Zohdi as our baritone soloist and Alasdair Friend as accompanist.
We will also be joined for a fifth time by the Hammig String Quartet, well known for performances in the local area and much more widely in the U.K. and beyond, who will accompany us in three of the works. These will be Vaughan Williams’ stirring and beautiful piece: ‘Five Mystical Songs’ (more usually heard with organ accompaniment); three attractive songs by Edward Elgar and ‘Salt Water Songs’, colourful settings of much-loved seafaring poetry (including Masefield’s ‘Cargoes’) by local composer and former choir member Geoff Lawrence. The quartet and choir will also perform separate contributions including Haydn’s ‘Te Deum’ and two settings of nursery rhymes in the style of Handel with keyboard accompaniment.
The audience will be invited to join us at the end of the concert for light refreshments to round off a relaxing evening of musical pleasure.
