We have chosen a varied programme appropriate to the season and to a feeling of celebration and thanksgiving for a year of growth and sustenance. Our main work is Dvorak’s Mass in D which he wrote mainly at his summer home, Vysoka, south-west of Prague, surrounded by the flowers in his well-tended garden and the natural tree-rich scenery which he loved so much. The mass was written for the consecration of his friend Josef Hlavka’s new chapel at Luzany Castle. Its tuneful approach makes it a pleasure to sing and listen to. This main work is accompanied by a variety of shorter pieces reflecting the results of Nature’s bounty and our work with her. Surrounded by flowers in St George’s Church, we will sing about them in a short piece by Saint-Saens (‘The flowers and the trees’). The harvest itself is the theme of Malcolm Williamson’s jaunty ‘Harvest Thanksgiving’ and Maurice Greene’s, similarly happy, ‘Thou Visitest the Earth’. Finally, in ‘Thanks be to God’, a great movement from Mendelssohn’s ‘Elijah’, we are reminded that none of our food or flowers will grow without water and that its lack or excess threatens our life today as much as in biblical times, highlighting the need for us to play our part in looking after our environment.
The concert will be conducted by Nick Wibberley, accompanied on organ and piano by Alasdair Friend and there will also be a soprano solo item from Fiona Hunt.
Interval drinks will be available.
Tickets (£11, 8 to 18 year olds free) are available from choir members, at the door or in advance either from the SLS Box Office (020 8656 2815) or from the church office at St.George’s, Monday to Friday 8 a.m. to 3 p.m.
